Port Ligar is a superb location for all water
sports - boating, sailing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, water-skiing,and
of course fishing. All our guests have access to many walks, either
through our large stands of virgin native bush or around the farm
tracks which have spectacular views of the Cook Strait and Admiralty
Bay regions. You can see a variety of large trees such as rimu,
kahikatea, kohekohe and matai plus an abundance of our beautiful nikau
palms and tree ferns.
On a good clear day you can see as far afield as Mt
Taranaki and Kapiti. For the more adventurous mountain biking is an
option. For those who wish just to recover from the busyness and
stresses of life you can laze with a good book without the
interruptions of television or telephones, kick back with a cup of
coffee and enjoy the peace and tranquility or just close the eyes and
sleep the hours away in a guilt free environment.
After dark you can view glow worms, possums and
often hear and sometimes see our rowdy wee nocturnal visitors - the
little blue penguin.
The bird life is abundant - to name a
few........gannets, shags, gulls, tuis, bellbirds, fantails, pigeons
and the cheeky weka.
Seals and schools of dolphins are frequent visitors
in Port Ligar. Orca and the occasional whale have been seen in the
bay. We also have a group of 'pet' stingrays who love to cruise our
shoreline in search of food.
There is always plenty of fresh sea food to enjoy
with your meals. Blue cod can be caught from the reefs off the
headlands around the bay and there are many other species which are
plentiful including kahawai, snapper, gurnard and cultivated mussels.
For those who are interested, tours of our mussel
farms are available also.
